The Test: 500 Images, 3 Platforms

We created the same 50 prompts across 10 categories (product photography, illustrations, logos, UI mockups, landscapes, portraits, abstract art, food, architecture, and marketing banners) on Midjourney v6, DALL-E 3, and Flux 1.1 Pro. Three designers independently scored each output.

Midjourney v6 -- Best for Aesthetics (9.2/10)

Strengths:

  • Consistently the most visually stunning output
  • Best at photorealistic images and artistic compositions
  • Excellent understanding of lighting, depth, and atmosphere
  • New --style raw flag produces incredibly natural photos
  • Weaknesses:

  • Discord-only workflow is clunky (web app in beta)
  • Text rendering in images still unreliable
  • Slower generation than competitors
  • No API for developers
  • Best for: Marketing visuals, social media content, artistic projects.

    Pricing: Basic $10/month. Standard $30/month. Pro $60/month.

    DALL-E 3 -- Best for Accuracy & Text (8.8/10)

    Strengths:

  • Best text rendering in images by far
  • Most accurate prompt following -- what you describe is what you get
  • Native ChatGPT integration for iterative refinement
  • API available with simple integration
  • Built-in content policy prevents misuse
  • Weaknesses:

  • Images often have a slight "AI look" compared to Midjourney
  • Less artistic flair in default output
  • Limited style control
  • Best for: Marketing banners with text, product mockups, developer integrations.

Pricing: Included with ChatGPT Plus ($20/month). API: $0.04-$0.08/image.

Flux 1.1 Pro -- Best Open Source Option (8.6/10)

    Strengths:

  • Open source and can be self-hosted
  • Excellent photorealism approaching Midjourney quality
  • Fast generation (2-3 seconds via API)
  • Available on fal.ai, Replicate, and other platforms
  • No content restrictions when self-hosted
  • Weaknesses:

  • Requires technical setup for self-hosting
  • Text rendering below DALL-E 3
  • Fewer style presets than Midjourney
  • Best for: Developers building image features, privacy-sensitive projects, high-volume generation.

    Pricing: Free (self-hosted). fal.ai: ~$0.025/image. Replicate: ~$0.03/image.
