Why Prompts Matter More Than Anything

The same AI model can produce garbage or gallery-worthy art. The difference? The prompt.

A bad prompt: "a cat" -- produces generic, boring results.

A great prompt: "a majestic Maine Coon cat with emerald eyes and flowing silver fur, sitting regally on an antique velvet armchair, warm golden hour lighting streaming through a Victorian window, oil painting style, rich colors, highly detailed fur texture" -- produces art you would frame.

This guide teaches you to write prompts that consistently produce stunning results on OpenArt.

The 7-Element Prompt Framework

Every great prompt contains these elements:

1. Subject (30% of your prompt)

The main focus of your image. Be extremely specific.

Weak: "a woman"

Strong: "a young woman in her twenties with flowing auburn hair, sharp cheekbones, and confident posture"

Weak: "a city"

Strong: "a futuristic megacity with towering glass skyscrapers, flying vehicles, and holographic advertisements"

Include:

  • Physical characteristics
  • Age, species, or type
  • Pose or action
  • Emotional expression
  • Defining features
  • 2. Setting/Environment (15%)

Where is this happening? Context transforms images.

    Weak: "in a forest"

Strong: "in an ancient redwood forest with shafts of golden sunlight piercing through the canopy, moss-covered ground, and a gentle mist hanging in the air"

    Describe:

  • Location type
  • Time of day
  • Weather conditions
  • Atmosphere
  • Background elements
  • 3. Lighting (15%)

Lighting makes or breaks an image. Always specify it.

    Types of lighting:

  • "Golden hour sunlight" - Warm, magical, romantic
  • "Dramatic side lighting" - Bold, artistic, moody
  • "Soft diffused light" - Gentle, flattering, calm
  • "Neon lights" - Cyberpunk, urban, energetic
  • "Candlelight" - Intimate, warm, historical
  • "Studio lighting" - Professional, clean, commercial
  • "Moonlight" - Mysterious, ethereal, cool tones
  • "Backlit silhouette" - Dramatic, artistic, mysterious
  • Always describe:

  • Light source
  • Light quality (soft, harsh, diffused)
  • Light color/temperature
  • Shadow characteristics
  • 4. Art Style (15%)

    Define the visual approach.

    Popular styles:

  • "Oil painting in the style of the Old Masters"
  • "Digital concept art, trending on ArtStation"
  • "Anime illustration, Studio Ghibli style"
  • "Hyperrealistic photography"
  • "Watercolor painting, impressionist"
  • "3D render, Octane, Cinema 4D"
  • "Comic book art, bold linework"
  • "Minimalist vector illustration"
  • You can also reference specific artists:

  • "In the style of Greg Rutkowski" (fantasy art)
  • "Makoto Shinkai inspired" (anime landscapes)
  • "Alphonse Mucha art nouveau" (decorative, ornate)
  • 5. Color Palette (10%)

    Colors set the mood.

    Approaches:

  • Named palette: "warm earth tones", "cool blues and purples", "vibrant neon colors"
  • Specific colors: "deep crimson, gold, and midnight blue"
  • Mood-based: "muted, desaturated colors" or "high contrast, saturated hues"
  • Reference-based: "autumn color palette", "ocean-inspired colors"
  • 6. Mood/Atmosphere (10%)

The emotional feel of the image.

    Mood words:

  • Peaceful: serene, tranquil, calm, meditative

  • Mysterious: enigmatic, ethereal, haunting, mystical
  • Joyful: vibrant, lively, cheerful, energetic
  • Dark: ominous, foreboding, sinister, moody

  • 7. Technical Quality (5%)

    Boost quality with technical keywords.

    Always include:

  • "highly detailed"
  • "sharp focus"
  • "professional quality"
  • For photorealism:

  • "8K resolution"
  • "DSLR photography"
  • "shallow depth of field"
  • "bokeh"
  • For digital art:

  • "trending on ArtStation"
  • "award-winning"
  • "masterpiece"
  • The Perfect Prompt Template

[DETAILED SUBJECT with pose/action], [SETTING with atmosphere],
[LIGHTING description], [ART STYLE and references],
    [COLOR PALETTE], [MOOD/ATMOSPHERE], [TECHNICAL QUALITY]

    Example:

"A fierce samurai warrior with battle-worn armor and a glowing katana, standing on a cliff edge overlooking a burning village below. The scene is lit by the orange glow of flames contrasting with the blue moonlight. Painted in the style of dramatic Japanese ukiyo-e meets modern concept art. Color palette of deep crimson, burnt orange, and midnight blue. The mood is intense and melancholic. Highly detailed, cinematic composition, 8K quality."

    Model-Specific Prompting

Different OpenArt models respond to prompts differently.

    For Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL)

  • Responds well to detailed, structured prompts
  • Handles complex scenes with multiple elements
  • Good at following specific style references
  • Benefits from quality boosters
  • Best for: Versatile use, detailed illustrations, concept art

    For Realistic Vision

  • Use photography terminology
  • Specify camera settings: "shot on Canon EOS R5, 85mm lens, f/1.4"
  • Include lighting setups: "three-point lighting", "natural window light"
  • Avoid painterly or illustrated style words
  • Best for: Portraits, product photography, realistic scenes

    For DreamShaper (Anime)

  • Use anime-specific terminology
  • Reference anime studios: "Studio Ghibli style", "Makoto Shinkai inspired"
  • Include anime visual elements: "cherry blossoms", "dramatic wind", "sparkles"
  • Specify anime sub-styles: "shonen", "shoujo", "mecha"
  • Best for: Anime characters, manga illustrations, Japanese-style art

    For OpenArt Creative

  • Embrace stylization over realism
  • Use expressive color descriptions
  • Works well with abstract concepts
  • Responds to emotional and atmospheric prompts
  • Best for: Illustrations, stylized art, creative interpretations

    Negative Prompts: Equally Important

Negative prompts tell the AI what NOT to generate. They prevent common failures.

    Essential negative prompts:

blurry, low quality, pixelated, jpeg artifacts,
deformed, disfigured, bad anatomy, wrong proportions,
extra limbs, missing limbs, floating limbs,
    text, watermark, signature, logo,
    ugly, duplicate, morbid, mutilated

    For portraits add:

bad hands, extra fingers, missing fingers,
    crossed eyes, asymmetrical eyes,
    weird face, distorted face

    For full body add:

bad feet, missing feet, extra legs,
    weird pose, anatomically incorrect

    Advanced Technique: Weighted Prompts

Control emphasis with weights (1.0 = normal, higher = more emphasis):

    (glowing eyes:1.4), (detailed armor:1.2), warrior, (misty background:0.8)

This emphasizes glowing eyes strongly, armor moderately, and de-emphasizes background.

    Advanced Technique: Prompt Blending

Combine concepts with the pipe symbol:

portrait of a woman | made of flowers | ethereal lighting

The AI blends these concepts together.

    Common Mistakes and Fixes

    Mistake 1: Too Vague

    Bad: "a cool robot"

Fix: "a sleek humanoid robot with chrome plating and blue LED accents, standing in a futuristic laboratory, dramatic rim lighting, concept art style, highly detailed"

    Mistake 2: Contradictory Styles

Bad: "photorealistic oil painting anime style"

Fix: Choose ONE primary style, then add subtle influences: "oil painting with anime-inspired composition"

    Mistake 3: Too Many Subjects

Bad: "a knight and a dragon and a castle and a princess and..."

Fix: Focus on 1-2 main subjects. Add others as background elements: "a knight facing a dragon, castle silhouette in the distant background"

    Mistake 4: Forgetting Lighting

    Bad: "portrait of a man"

Fix: "portrait of a man, soft Rembrandt lighting, warm tones, subtle shadows"

    Mistake 5: No Style Direction

    Bad: "a forest scene"

Fix: "a forest scene painted in impressionist style with visible brushstrokes and dappled light"

    Step 2: Identify What Works

Which image is closest to your vision? What elements work?

    Step 3: Refine

Add more detail to what works. Remove or modify what does not.

    Step 4: Experiment

Try different models, styles, or lighting with your refined prompt.

    Step 5: Polish
